CNet.co.uk tests a prototype Santa Rosa laptop, and likes it. (Santa Rosa is an Intel internal code name; production versions will be called Centrino Duo for consumers, Centrino Pro for business customers.) Even better: Intel is increasing support for white book (unbranded) laptop vendors, so it looks like Santa Rosa goodness will be available not just to those who can pay top-tier hardware prices, but to the rest of us as well.
According to Pocket-lint, the new Sony Viao due out this summer will use Santa Rosa technology, so it looks like we don't have long to wait for Centrino Duo (or Centrino Pro) laptops to find their way into our favorite stores and onto our favorite online retailers' websites.
NotebookReview.com says HP Compaq may have Centrino Duo/Centrino Pro laptops available as early as May. That's this month. Hmm....
Meanwhile, Intel and Skype are teaming up to give U.S. and Canada residents free calls on Mothers Day (Sunday, May 13) this year, and you do *not* need to have the latest Santa Rosa-based laptop to take advantage of this offer. You can use any old laptop you happen to have around that will run Skype. Or even a desktop, if you prefer. The calls are just as free either way.
E-Ink: not just for eBook readers anymore? Maybe for the moment, but an Intel demo a couple of weeks ago shows that just maybe, one day -- and not too far in the future at that -- we may have super-thin laptops, not to mention super-thin screens for our desktops. Ah, the ergonomic possibilities....
